Somerset is located in Perry County. This village of around 1,500 is about ten miles north of the Perry County seat or New Lexington. Somerset is the home of the oldest Catholic Church in Ohio, which is Saint Joseph Church. This church is located just outside town on State Route 383. In 1810, immigrants from Somerset, Pennsylvania, established the village. It was named in honor of their home. It was located along Zane’s Trace, which is a midway point between Lancaster and Zanesville. Perry County was formed seven years later with land from Fairfield, Muskingum and Washington counties. In 1819, the county built its first courthouse in Somerset. Then, 10 years later, the permanent courthouse was built in the town square. Because New Lexington grew between 1851 and 1859, the Ohio legislature passed laws to move the county seat to its current location. The old courthouse was eventually leased to the village of Somerset to use as the village’s town hall.
